The School of Information Sciences (SIS) at the University of Tampere invites applications for a fixed-term full-time postdoctoral researcher’s position for a period from 1 June 2016 to 28 February 2018 or as agreed.
We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with experience in some of the following Probabilistic modeling, Statistics, Machine learning, Data mining, Information retrieval, Efficient large-scale computing.
You will participate in research in the project Novel methods for analysis of online consumer behavior (NAOMI), which is a collaboration between University of Tampere, Lappeenranta University of Technology, and industrial collaborator Aller Media. You will develop new well-performing, computationally efficient, and scalable methods based on probabilistic modeling, data mining, and machine learning for data analysis, visualization, information retrieval, and prediction in big consumer behavior data. The main data sources are large structured data of online conversations and clickstream data of consumer behavior.
You will work with Professors Jaakko Peltonen (NAOMI principal investigator), Jyrki Nummenmaa, and Kalervo Järvelin at the University of Tampere.
Other tasks of research staff are governed by University of Tampere's regulations on human resources, Section 3.
Applicant and contract details
A person appointed as a postdoctoral researcher must hold an appropriate doctoral degree in a field related to the research tasks (such as statistics, computer science, visual analytics, or a related field) and must be able to pursue scientific research independently as well as have the instructional skills needed in the post. A strong track record of research and scientific publication in top venues is appreciated. Previous experience in consumer behavior data, models of textual data sets and online behavior data types is also appreciated. Good programming skills are expected. The most likely languages to be utilized in the project are Python, and Matlab or R. A part of the software development will be done on the Hadoop Big Data platform. Good written and spoken communication skills in English, Finnish, or both are desirable.
The remuneration of the postdoctoral researcher post is based on level 5 of the job-related salary element for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of the Finnish Universities. The basic salary will be supplemented with a performance increase based on the employee's individual performance. The positions carry a four-month trial period.
It is also possible to start as a researcher if one has made good progress in PhD studies and has a sufficient track record. In this case the remuneration of the post is based on level 4 of the job-related salary element for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of the Finnish Universities.
