DTU Compute would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position starting September 1st, 2016. The project is financed jointly by the Manufacturing Academy of Denmark (MADE) and by DTU.
Project Description
The Statistics and Data Analysis section at DTU Compute is seeking a PhD candidate in the area of statistical data analysis for large datasets collected from manufacturing processes. The project involves close collaboration with the LEGO Group and the Department of Mechanical Engineering of DTU. The primary goal of the project is to develop proper data analysis methods for process understanding and improvement in injection moulding production at the industry partner’s plants. New sensory data through image analysis of the individual products will be correlated with the process data particularly with the pressure profiles in each production cycle. This is expected to cause early detection of faults. For this objective, the conventional statistical tools will fall short in delivering the appropriate analysis due to the complex nature of the data. The data rich environments in which this project will be conducted necessitate genuine scientific contributions rather than mere applications of already existing methods.
Requirements
The PhD candidate must have a master degree in engineering science or natural science or equivalent academic qualifications. The candidates must have a very strong background in statistical analysis, mathematical modelling, and computing. Candidates with practical experience with large datasets and machine learning methods are preferred and highly encouraged to apply. Furthermore knowledge in statistical software packages such as R and proficient coding skills will be required. The candidate must be fluent in English, both speaking and writing with great communication and presentation skills.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in the ITMAN Graduate School Programme of DTU Compute. Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate Professor Murat Kulahci (DTU Compute), Associate Professor Guido Todello (DTU Mechanical Engineering) and Associate Professor Henrik Aanæs (DTU Compute).
Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms for the PhD position are consistent with the current Danish rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
