THE ROLE:
We are looking for an Intelligent Systems Specialist in our Christchurch office to deliver soundly-researched solutions for various exploitation and inference tasks. This includes formulation of models, development of algorithms, implementation and testing of prototypes, to deliver required functionality for anomaly detection, relationship discovery and event prediction engines that will form a core component of Wynyard’s information discovery platform. The research is expected to significantly enhance the performance of Wynyard’s advanced analytics.
Wynyard’s research function is currently focusing on the area of information discovery from structured and unstructured data. This work draws heavily on statistical modelling and probabilistic machine learning, such as Bayesian nonparametrics, probabilistic graphical models, variational approximation, belief propagation and random graphs (including stochastic blockmodels, random dot product graphs, latent space random graphs).
In addition to the specific research objectives, it is also anticipated that this position will provide general advice on techniques for evaluating information discovery systems, and suggest improvements to Wynyard’s overall strategy in this area.
THE KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Working as a crucial member of the research team responsible for enhancing Wynyard’s advanced analytics capabilities.
- Analysing solution requirements and formulation, implementation and testing of prototype solutions.
- Analysing problems in algorithm development and guiding the rectification of faults in programs.
- Guiding other members of the project team about relevant aspects of your specialty used in product research and development.
- Undertaking analysis of current technology in computational intelligence products and determining approaches to implement in our products, which will improve their applicability, performance and integrity.
- Meeting with user groups to gather and analyse end user requirements.
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
- PhD or Masters in the areas of statistics / computer science / mathematics, preferably specializing in one or more of the following areas: Bayesian statistics (especially Bayesian nonparametrics, hierarchical models, probabilistic graphical models, variational approximation, belief propagation) or random graphs (especially stochastic blockmodels, random dot product graphs, latent space random graphs)
- Experience in applying the above skills and knowledge to realistic problems
- Experience in Matlab, R, Java, development of model-based machine learning / statistical algorithms
- Strong skills in statistics, probabilistic machine learning, data mining, relating entities and concepts, big data analysis
- Strong mathematical background, especially in statistical inference, probability theory, linear albegra and calculus, and preferably some knowledge of graph theory
- Good oral and written communication skills
