Your tasks will include:
Diagnostic accuracy systematic review and meta-analysis using public available studies comparing non-motor symptoms in PD versus age-matched healthy volunteers (HV)
Statistical analyses of RWD longitudinal databases (PPMI and BIOFIND databases) for the identification of prodromal symptoms among non-motor symptoms included in the MDS Criteria for Prodromal PD (e.g. with low multicollinearity) compared to not age-related (identified with the systematic review and meta-analysis)
Anchor the identified prodromal symptoms to fluid biomarkers (sensitivity and specificity in prodromal PD vs HV)
Who You Are:
Enrolled in a PhD or medical degree program at a university and are looking to expand your experience with an industry internship (must still be enrolled at university for 50% of the duration of the stay at Roche)
Having a clinical background or a background in Parkinson‘s disease or other movement disorders or clinical biomarker analysis is a plus
Proficient in SAS, R, or any other programing/scripting language for data analysis
Capable of independently applying epidemiological, biostats and/or systematic reviews and meta-analysis on existing data sets.
Able to propose new analytical methods based on current state-of-the art and published reports
Proficient in English
Good analytical skills

The Position/Department:
As a RiSE intern in the NRD DTA you will join our group in Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development , and perform at the Roche Innovation Center Basel, Switzerland, data analysis using Real World Data (RWD) and systematic reviews with meta-analysis of diagnostic accuracy. Understanding Parkinson’s disease at the earliest stage of the disease is key for the development of drugs aimed to slow the progression of the disease. Movement Disorders Society (MDS) published guidelines on the definition of these stages and defined them as prodromal Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, there are a series of shortcomings that currently limit their use in drug development (too broad range of symptoms, absence of biomarkers, no clear progression rate to manifest motor PD). Using RWD, systematic reviews and meta-analysis of diagnostic accuracy, this project will focus on the identification of prodromal symptoms and biomarkers that predict the phenoconversion to manifest motor PD. If successful, these predictors will be used in the modelling of clinical development plans (CDPs) in future clinical trials. The prodromal PD symptoms used in the model will be generated by narrowing down the number of non-motor symptoms (NMS) used in the MDS criteria (eg. multicollinearity and comparison with age-related NMS) to disentangle the ‘real’ prodromal from the huge number of NMS currently included. The second step will be to anchor them to available fluid biomarkers to confirm a biological link to the disease and give an avenue for better screening criteria. Your will be hosted and mentored by Roche scientists who will guide you through your research and provide you with the needed work infrastructure and collaborative network.
