The 2019 edition of the Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) Summer Fellowship will feature a new international site in the UK, through a collaboration with The Alan Turing Institute and the University of Warwick.
What is the DSSG Academic Internship?
The academic internship (referred to as a Fellowship by the University of Chicago) is a paid project-based summer training programme designed to produce data scientists with strong skills in solving real-world problems and a passion for social impact. Since 2013, over 200 graduate and undergraduate students have spent their summers as academic interns (referred to as Fellows by the University of Chicago) with DSSG, a University of Chicago summer programme. Academic interns work with non-profit and government partners around the world and each of the more than 60 projects to date has helped these organisations do more with their data allowing them to improve their services, interventions and outreach. This year the DSSG programme will run for the first time in the UK. Academic interns will be based primarily at the University of Warwick, with an opening, closing and training days at The Alan Turing Institute and other locations in London.
What are we looking for?
Current or recently-graduated undergraduate and graduate students worldwide are eligible for the academic internship. Successful candidates have different skill profiles and backgrounds but are expected to:
Have some programming, statistics and data analysis skills in addition to a passion for making a social impact.
Have had some prior experience using a programming language to analyse data (e.g., Python, R). Be undertaking or have completed postgraduate study or be in their final year of undergraduate study.
Have strong communication skills and be passionate about enacting social change. Be able to make a full-time commitment for 3 months from 10th June until the 31st August Candidates who do not fit the typical criteria but believe they have both the computational skills and passion to excel are encouraged to apply.

The ‘Intern’ role advertised on the University of Chicago site is a separate opportunity and not necessarily available at the University of Warwick programme.
