DESCRIPTION:
A competition is open for the award of one Post-Doctoral Research Scholarship for research activities in the field of remote sensing, within the framework of the project BLS-BIOMASS: Below, Litter & Shrub BIOMASS density mapping combining optical, LiDAR and SAR Earth Observation data, taking place at the Forest Research Centre (CEF) of the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, financed the European Space Agency (ESA Contract No. 4000144713/24/I-DT-bgh), under the following conditions:
PLAN AND WORKPLACE:
The main objective of the work plan is to develop a new methodology capable of mapping belowground biomass density (BGBD), litter biomass density (LBD), shrub biomass density (SBD) and aboveground biomass density (AGDB), and the corresponding uncertainty estimation, combining optical and radar Earth observation data from the Sentinel and ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 missions. The specific objectives are: i) mapping BGBD, LBD, SBD and AGDB by combining Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and ALOS-2 data; ii) integrating the with the Climate Change Initiative (CCI) Biomass product, to generate maps of total biomass; iii) using GEDI and ICESat-2 data as calibration data. The work will be developed at the Forest Research Centre (CEF) of the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, under the scientific guidance of Professor João Neves Silva and Doutor Juan Guerra Hernández.
REQUIREMENTS:
Required academic degree: The scholarship is intended for carrying out R&D activities by holders of a doctorate degree for less than three years. Ph.D. in Mathematics or Statistics, Remote Sensing, Forestry and Natural Resources Management, Geography, Environmental Engineering, or other related areas.
Competencies/qualifications/specific requirements: Scientific areas: Forestry and Agriculture/Earth and Environmental Sciences Skills: - Experience in statistical inference and regression analysis applied to the estimation of forest variables using forest inventory and remotely sensed auxiliary data; - Programming in Python, R or other languages suitable for statistical inference; - Training and knowledge in Remote Sensing (optical, LiDAR and SAR data) will also be valued.
Other requirements: - Oral and written fluency in English; - Excellent teamwork and initiative skills; - Availability to travel and stay abroad; - Good record of scientific publication.
FINANCING AND SCHOLARSHIP COMPONENTS:
The scholarship will be financed within the framework of project BLS-BIOMASS: Below, Litter & Shrub BIOMASS density mapping combining optical, LiDAR and SAR Earth Observation data, taking place at the Forest Research Centre (CEF) of the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, financed the European Space Agency (ESA Contract No. 4000144713/24/I-DT-bgh).
The monthly maintenance allowance corresponds to 1.801,00€, to which the reimbursement of voluntary social security (applicable to scholarships with a duration of six months or more) is added, according to the table of monthly maintenance subsidy values, set out in annex I of Regulation no. 950/2019. https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_atu…
