Lancaster University has one of the largest and strongest statistics research groups in the UK comprising 21 academic staff, 9 research associates and 32 FTE research students. The statistics group takes a leading role in the development of statistical methodology such as Markov chain Monte Carlo, particle filtering, extreme value theory, wavelets, the analysis of longitudinal and spatial data and mixture modelling.
Application interests include medicine, industry and the social sciences.
The Medical and Pharmaceutical Statistics Research Unit collaborates with the pharmaceutical industry and is part of the MRC-funded North West Hub for Trial Methodology Research with the Universities of Liverpool and Bangor.
With researchers in the Faculty of Health and Medicine, the Department plays a leading role in developing and applying methods of spatial epidemiology.
In collaboration with the Department of Management Science, we host STOR-i, one of only three EPSRC-funded Doctoral Training Centres in the Mathematical Sciences.
The Department teaches statistics to mathematics students, and to students on other degrees. A short course programme is provided that attracts participants from around the country and often from other parts of Europe.
Students following four year MSci degrees, or MSc degrees in Statistics, Quantitative Methods or Quantitative Finance undertake substantial dissertations involving the implementation of statistical methods or the development of new approaches. The Department provides a Statistical Advisory Service to help researchers and PhD students across the campus with the statistical aspects of their research.
You should have a PhD in Statistics or in a related discipline. You will undertake research in statistics and will make contributions to the statistics teaching and advisory activities of the Department. The precise duties assigned will depend on your experience and the need to ensure that all of the Department's commitments can be met.
This is a fixed term position for 18 months, commencing 1 October 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter.
